Ice Age: Continental Drift, breaking grounds in 3D?

the 3d guru
10 years on, we see the fourth installment of the Ice Age series coming to the big screen. Being the second 3D movie in the series after Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs in 2009, we would expect all the kinks from the previous movie to be ironed out. Unfortunately, I can’t compare the two… I didn’t watch the previous movie… But that allows me to make an impartial judgment of this movie right? So here goes!

Suited for 3D? (what does this mean?)
Animation films like Ice Age are always great for 3D. There is always enough action to keep us entertained, and don't forget the beautiful backdrop of the movie. Ice Age: Continental Drift provides both pirate action and seismic movements of earth shattering proportions. Still deciding on its 3D fit? Let me give you a hand.

Score: 5/5

Filmed for 3D? (what does this mean?)
After Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, there is no doubt that this movie was intended for 3D right from the get go. It was evident that a lot of planning and effort was put into incorporating 3D into the movie. There were very few scenes that felt flat or looked 2D.

Score: 5/5

Closed Window Experience (what does this mean?)
From the closed window point of view, the 3D was a joy to watch. The depth of the 3D was evident almost throughout the entire movie. There were very few parts that felt 2D. The only scenes that felt a little flat and didn’t give as much depth were some underwater scenes and the aerial scenes of mist in the sky. But these scenes were minimal.

Score: 4/5

Open Window Experience (what does this mean?)
Hmm… Where do I begin? This was the greatest let down for me in the entire movie’s 3D. Not because there were no scenes that broke through the movie screen barrier, but because they were half-hearted. There were so many scenes that were begging to explode through the movie screen and reach out at the audience! But the amount that actually protruded felt very little. It was teasing the audience instead of getting in their faces and giving a full-blooded 3D effect!

Score: 3/5

Naked Eye Test (what does this mean?)
The blurrier the better I say! I took off the 3D glasses a number of times during this movie, and the movie was blur every single time. However, there were a few scenes that just did not live up to the blurriness of other scenes. These were scenes that felt quite flat for 3D. For these scenes, it just felt like the 3D glasses helped to correct an unclear image than to add actual 3D value to the picture.

Score: 4/5

Final verdict
I’m NOT standing on top of a mountain shouting “WATCH THIS MOVIE IN 3D!” But this 3D movie is well worth the extra dollars you part with. If you’re a fan of the series, you will enjoy the movie in 3D. If you’re not much of a fan, you will enjoy the movie in 3D.

Enough from me! Would YOU recommend watching this movie in 3D?
YES (Watch it in 3D!)
NO (Better off watching in 2D)
