Katy Perry: Part of Me in 3D.. literally!

the 3d guru
Watching 'Katy Perry: Part of Me' would have never crossed my mind if not for its feature in 3D. I didn't know half the songs by her. I didn't even recognize what she looked like. All that has changed now that I have watched her movie. As The 3D Guru, all of that shouldn't, and didn't, matter to me. My focus was on the 3D worth of this movie. At the same time, it is hard to ignore the content of the movie. So now, I can consciously avoid Katy Perry and her music.. Just kidding! Let's see how the 3D fared in this movie.

Suited for 3D? (what does this mean?)
This movie is essentially a documentary/biography of Katy Perry and her road to stardom. Right off the top of our heads - not the most appropriate material for 3D. Of course there are documentaries of volcanoes, dinosaurs, and the deep blue sea that are fit for 3D. But who in their right mind would film a biography in 3D? Enter Katy Perry. Perhaps not the best way to use 3D, but considering the gimmicks from her concerts, maybe there was some potential after all.

Score: 2/5

Filmed for 3D? (what does this mean?)
As much as I hate to admit it, this movie was filmed with 3D in mind. There was a lot of planning that went into the movie. As a biography of Katy Perry that contains quite a bit of home videos, you can't possibly make the entire movie in 3D. The filmmakers understood this and put some thought into the different segments where they could maximize 3D effects, instead of making a lazy post-conversion of a 2D movie. A good blend, but as the title suggests, only a part of this movie was in 3D.

Score: 4/5

Closed Window Experience (what does this mean?)
How do I score this segment when only half the movie was in 3D?? These include just the concert scenes and photograph stills. The concert scenes were pretty good in 3D. And as far as 3D in the closed window experience goes, it really felt like you were watching a live concert going on behind the screen. There was a lot of depth that made the concert scenes look very real and nice. But like I said, the concert scenes make up for half or less than half of the movie! The handful of photographs in the movie were nicely converted to 3D as well. They looked like holographic photographs. Pretty cool.

Score: 3/5

Open Window Experience (what does this mean?)
The open window experience made for just a tiny fraction of the 3D. Some of these were just words popping out from the screen that signified names or days or locations. Otherwise, there were only a couple of concert scenes that had things flying at you towards the end. Some confetti and foam spraying. That's about it. I can't even tell if that's a spoiler. Don't get me wrong, the effects were very nice. But they literally lasted just seconds.

Score: 1/5

The Naked Eye Test (what does this mean?)
The 3D segments of the movie passed the naked eye test with flying colours. These scenes were very blurred with the 3D glasses off, and achieved great depth making for a nice 3D effect with the glasses on. I was taking the 3D glasses off numerous times in the movie and realized that the filmmakers planned for only selected scenes in this movie to be in 3D and didn't even bother trying for others. In the end, it was a decent mix of 2D and 3D. Plus, I can't deny that the 3D scenes were well made.

Score: 3/5

Total Score: 13/25

Final Verdict
This was a very tough movie for me to judge. The 3D effects were good for scenes that were made in 3D. However, my judging considers that when people have paid top dollar for a 3D movie ticket, they must be thoroughly entertained by 3D effects throughout the movie and not just during certain scenes. So based on that, I think that the part of Katy Perry that was in 3D does not justify the amount you part with. For fan girls and boys who want to donate to the Katy Perry fund, have fun!

Enough from me! Would YOU recommend watching this movie in 3D?
YES (Watch it in 3D!)
NO (Better off watching in 2D)
