3D Review of "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters"

Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters 3D review

Should I watch "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" in 3D?

"Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" puts an action-packed spin on the classic children's short story by the Brothers Grimm. But most of the action happens when the scarred siblings have grown up and become self-employed witch hunters. To complement this, director Tommy Wirkola injects 3D into this movie. Sounds promising? Yes it is! I can't say much about the movie itself, but read on for the full 3D review of "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" or just check out the final verdict.

Suited for 3D? (what does this mean?)

Are the story and visual sequence in "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" relevant for a 3D feature? After all the hard work that went into massacring a classic children's short story, "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunter" emerged an action-packed movie that has guns, knives, magic, brooms, the works. Witch Hunting gets the green light for 3D.

Score: 5/5

Filmed for 3D? (what does this mean?)

How much did director Tommy Wirkola care about the 3D when filming this movie? Between the script, screenplay, and 3D, I would say that the 3D probably got the most of his attention. A lot of the action sequences and movements were definitely tailored for 3D effect.

Score: 4/5

Closed Window Experience (what does this mean?)

The setting of villages divided by the woods does not do much for the depth of 3D. There definitely is visible depth in the movie that is fitting for the setting. But, it can be overlooked time and again. There were only a few scenes that boasted this 3D effect. Overall, the amount of depth created in the 3D world of "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" was sufficient, but not great.

Score: 4/5

Open Window Experience (what does this mean?)

This 3D element was taken seriously by director Tommy Wirkola as he always finds an excuse to have some objects flying out at the audience. However, the selection of objects and scenes could have been improved. It seemed like some of these scenes were forced. Think house burning down vs. a gun shot straight at the audience. The latter is the obvious choice. Unless you're an arsonist.

Score: 4/5

Naked-Eye Test (what does this mean?)

The 3D glasses definitely came in handy for the most part. However, during some scenes very little 3D effects were included that the picture actually looked fine without the 3D glasses on. These were prevalent in darker scenes where the blur without the 3D glasses on is harder to make out.

Score: 4/5
