DREDD: 3D Judgment Time!

In 1995, we were given a peek into a dystopian future where one man (Sylvester Stallone) was the law. Today, Karl Urban fills the boots of the badass Judge Dredd. Making a comeback after 17 years, it would only be lawful to make this movie in 3D. WARNING: This is not a remake of the Stallone movie. In fact, the plot is very similar to The Raid: Redemption, an  Indonesian movie. How ironic it would be if DREDD is slapped with a copyright infringement suit. Anyway, the trial is over for DREDD in 3D. Judgment Time!

Suited for 3D? (what does this mean?)
In a dystopian future, there exist authorities who have the combined powers of judge, jury, and executioner.. They are called 'Judges'. When you hear a line like that, get those 3D glasses ready, 'cause you know you're in for a treat. The plot follows two judges trapped in a 200 story building on lock-down, and hunted by an entire gang. Expect lots of shooting, explosions, gore, and a few shots of slo-mo. Definitely 3D fit.

Score: 5/5

Filmed for 3D? (what does this mean?)
The director definitely filmed this movie for 3D. The intention was strong, but execution faltered. The movie was well planned for 3D. It was clear from the movie that the 3D had certain purposes. Scenes were carefully selected, and made relevant for 3D. But the final product did not deliver on a number of occasions. These were mainly the clarity and consistency of 3D.

Score: 4/5

Closed Window Experience (what does this mean?)
I loved the closed window experience for this movie.. when it was present. The amazing thing about the closed window experience is that the depth of 3D was present even through the fast paced action sequences. However, there were a number of scenes that seemed flat. Hardly any depth could be felt during these scenes. This made me wonder if I would have enjoyed the action just as much in 2D. Dangerous thoughts to have while watching a 3D movie.

Score: 3/5

Open Window Experience (what does this mean?)
This area was a let down for me. So much potential for objects flying at your face went untapped. With the opening credits and title scene teasing us with awesome open window experience, the injustice that followed was intolerable. There were very few scenes of glass breaking and blood spurting that came out of the screen. Although these scenes were really good, the runtime given to such scenes was pathetic.

Score: 2/5

The Naked Eye Test (what does this mean?)
The 3D glasses were only useful for about three-quarters of the movie. These were deliberate 3D scenes. The other scenes looked just as good with the 3D glasses off. There were also a number of scenes that still looked blurred with the 3D glasses on. Although there was depth in these scenes, the picture quality was not sharp enough. It felt like the blur of the picture was not fully rectified by the 3D glasses.

Score: 3/5

Final Verdict
The 3D was not convincing enough for me to give a unanimous decision. But there is not enough evidence to deter people from watching DREDD in 3D. Hence, I find the defendant not guilty of providing substandard, unwatchable, criminal 3D.

Enough from me! Would YOU recommend watching this movie in 3D?
